Sixth grade is learning about classical art. We made our own scratchboard with orange oil pastel and black washable tempera paint. We had to put a thin layer of the black paint over our orange color. When it was dry we used wooden pointed tools to carve designs from greek myths or figures.

What a great project! Did you use oil pastel or chalk pastel for the base?
Oil pastels. The bright orange looked best. Went through all my orange pastels. Also be sure to have them draw their vase outline big. I didn't until my second class. Boys love drawing soldiers so have some line drawings for them to see.

Very nice! I am going to try this with 6th graders and simple print making! You have inspired me. Thanks for sharing!
