Treasure Island Mapmaking

A fourth Grade tradition is their Pirate Day.  In preparation , they read the story Treasure Island in class. They are also learning about maps. We made a Treasure Island map in art class.

The first step is to draw the outline of the map and to imagine their own island they want to portray.

The students add pictures of landforms, compass rose, ships, and sea faring creatures. Colored pencils are used to give some color

The treasure is marked with a red X and some places mentioned in the book such as spyglass hill.

The last step is to use liquid watercolor for the water, land, and scroll ends. When dry, the map is cut out.
