Ink resist watercolor-Eighth Grade

This effect is supposed to resemble the resist in batik fabric.
We are working on our square one Art projects in Eighth Grade. We took heavy watercolor paper and planned our design. We used white tempera paint as the resist. Every place there would be color we painted the white paint. Then we painted black ink over the whole painting.
We washed out the white paint and added watercolors. They did a great job

Did you use watercolor paper? I'm thinking the kids would make a big mess at the sink area while washing off the white tempera. How did you work that? These look great.
