Sixth Grade Watercolor Landscape collage

We learned many different watercolor techniques before making our collage. Each student incorporated salt, alcohol, wet in wet, graded wash, splattering, sponging, dry brush and scraping.
They had to choose what type of landscape to represent with their colors. Mixing colors was encouraged to get natural shades for their landscape.
Next we tore our strips in half to get different layers of our landscape to glue down to the paper.

We tried to get bright vivid colors by using less water and more pigment. The 6th graders made up their watercolor was in muffing tins to get enough to cover each strip. (4 x 6 inch) We used watercolor boards made from foam core to learn our wash techniques.

Square 1 Art

Square1art_3

That's right. The square 1 art fundraiser is here. Packets go home today, and they are due back by Thursday 11-4. This is such a great fundraiser. Each student receives a page of free stickers with their artwork on it. You can also order other items with your artwork, like a CD case, or a water bottle. I can't believe the water bottle is ONLY $. What a bargain! To see other items you can order, look at your packet, OR go visit www.square1art.com. There is such great stuff. All the money raised goes towards purchasing items needed for the art room. I am so excited about this fundraiser!

8th Grade Photo triptych Books

Notice the beautiful leaves painted on the binding of this book. You can click on any image to see more detail.

We have just finished our Photography unit and completed our photo collection in a book that each student created. First we covered cardboard with different colored papers to make the backboard of the book.
Then we used acrylic paints to make different colored pages and techniques. Some things we painted with were baby wipes, credit cards, brayers, and ojects to print with.
Next we sewed the books together with waxed linen thread. There were four signatures so we had four rows of stitching.
Lastly we altered some of our photos with sandpaper, pointed tools and water.
Here are some of the pages inside the books. Everyone had very creative ideas!

Making Christmas/Holiday Cards for our Troops

My 6th, 7th and 8th grades are making some holiday cards to send to our troops. We thought this was a good was to give them some encouragement. We wrote a personal message to one of the soldiers from the list. There was some info about where they were serving and a general idea of their position. Each student chose a name for their personalized card. Then they decorated the front with some cheerful painting or drawing. They will be distributed to each person by Christmas Day.

Clay Slab Boxes in Sixth Grade

The sixth grade is learning about Gothic art and our clay project is Gargoyle Boxes. We are on the first stage-making the box. We used a cardboard pattern to help form the box. We rolled out the clay without the help of a slab roller. We used slats of wood instead to get the sides even. We texturized the boxes with different plates. Next week we make the sculpture and lid to complete the project.
