Sixth Grade Sketchbook Design

The first thing we do in sixth grade each year is start off with a collage project. Sixth graders are given a sketchbook for the year and its fun to make it uniquely yours.

We talk about three layers of collage

First the background is glued down

Then a focal point is chosen- either drawn, cut out of a magazine or created from shapes.

Everyone comes up with different colors, images, and design.

The last step is to choose some embellishments.

One of the favorite choices is puff paint.

Mixed Media Collage Sketchbook covers

Every Semester we
personalize our sketchbooks in some way with color.

Last week, our first project was to do a mixed media collage with our name.
First step was to cover the outer edge of the cover with newpaper, music score, maps, and pages torn from books.

Then we chose an image for the center of the page. This was glued down and covered with Glue to protect the image from the acrylic paint.

We used stick on letters for each person's name.
Finally we painted the entire cover and then wiped off with several paper towels so the image and some of the text peeked through. Then the letters were peeled off to reveal our first layer of text underneath.
