Oil Pastel Self Portraits- 4th Grade

We are learning how to draw our portraits with good proportion of eyes, mouth, nose, etc. We used two sided mirrors to view our eye and nose shapes.

Adding our hairline, bangs and ears.

The next class we tested different colors to make our skin color. We added shading and cheek color on top of the base color.

Then we decided our hair colors, and eye colors.

Each student chose a background and color theme to use.

We used oil pastels for the medium. We learned how to blend the colors in the face and hair.

Self Portraits from a Convex Ball

We created self portraits in a new way. Each student was given a glass ornament to view their image and sketch what they saw.

There were two perspectives to draw: first, themselves, and second the background in the weird angles.

They did a rough draft on newsprint with pencil and the final was with charcoal and watercolor.
We looked at some art by Escher who has done some convex mirror paintings.

Here are some finished masterpieces!

Self Portraits in Watercolor in a New Perspective

Sixth grade tried a new angle on self portraits. Each student was given a silver Christmas ball and drew their image and behind them on a circle.  This was a practice sketch.

Next  we redrew on a circle of watercolor using charcoal only. The students were instructed on the use of charcoal and how to draw very lightly.

We looked at Jan Van Eyck's painting Arnolfini's Wedding.

We talked about symbolism in his work. Students learned the various symbols and what they stood for.
Here is the same type of view as the glass ball seen in a convex mirror.

Lastly we used watercolor and learned to mix our flesh colors.

Self Portraits in correct Proportion

We are learning about Van Gogh and his portraits in 7th grade. We practiced drawing a face correctly and now trying to draw our own.
