Black and White sculptures

We made some sculptures with wood, paper and black paint. These came out really neat and only took about an hour to make.
First, we painted a block and a piece of white paper (8x 11) with black paint on one side. Then, dried with a hairdryer and drew three large bubble numbers on the paper. We filled in the numbers with small doodle textures. After finished the numbers were cut out and hot glued to the black base. The paper was twisted until we liked the look of the sculpture.

Egyptian Animal Carving in 8th Grade Sculpture

We learned about carving in our Sculpture elective. The subject we chose from was Egyptian Animals. We studied a bit about the animals in the Nile River and Egypt. There were many animals the Egyptians carved out of stone to bury in the pyramids. Some animals were admired while others were despised. The first step was to draw on each side of our foam carving block the dimensions of the animal. We had to draw the side, top and front view. Even this was difficult before we started carving. Next we took away the negative space at the corners. We used steak knives, rasps, and metal shaping tools.

After we were finished carving, we chose a stone to imitate with our painting. Acrylic paints were used on the foam. Different layers or splattering accomplished this effect.

This student chose pyrite and used glitter to get the look.
The stone is in the far left of her paper she is trying to copy.

This was a difficult project and they all did a great job on subtractive carving. Once they go going, it was easier to see the animal shape coming out of the block.

6th grade Gothic Gargoyles in Clay

Sixth grade has finally completed their clay project this year. It has been a long haul with the supplier running out of clay and days off inbetween. They did a great job with the glazing at the end. The two pieces are designed to go together as a box.
Many different creatures were sculpted- they really used their imagination. I am still grading them and sending them home in shoeboxes. Please be patient to get yours. Grades will be on rubrics and sent home with the thursday folders after thanksgiving.

Glazing was fun. We learned how to pour the clear glaze into the box and swirl it around and turn it upside down so we didnt get it too thick inside.

Fall Watercolor Leaf paintings

This was an extra project some 7th graders completed this week. We took actual leaves to use as models and overlapped them on the paper. Then we used watercolor on the leaves. Techniques such as scraping the veins and salt were used. Lastly we painted the background.

Colored Pencil Portraits in 7th Grade

We just finished doing our self portraits in Seventh Grade. They spent each day learning the correct proportion , then each part of the face (lips, eyes, skin, hair) and then put it all together with colorful background.

This class was awesome. Some of the best work Ive seen in awhile. Each student rotated on the pottery wheel several times while working on this longterm project.
